My experience at the event:
What a tough race. Unfortunately the organizers made some silly mistakes for what was supposed to be an exceptional running event.
1) you can't start a race at 9am on Sunday in October in South Africa, don't you know how hot it gets? All the other races in the calendar start at 6.30 or 7!
2) you can't print 20.000 black shirts. Under the sun that's just silly
3) you can't start from Sandton, run through Alexandra (trying to avoid people, goats and not to kill yourself of the long downhills) and then finish the race 3/4km away from the start. We were all tired and we had to walk back to Sandton?
Yes, the race was tough and yes, I shouldn't have run it because of my hamstring injury. But I wanted to try. Just like
the terrible Soweto Marathon in 2010, another race going through the townships didn't live up to the crazy expections that sponsors (Nike) and various radios wanted to push. I finished, I got my medal, but this will be probably it. The only Nike event I will be happy to try will be the Jozi night race...
