My experience at the event:
My first triathlon! It was never supposed to be easy, and on the sprint distance (750m swim, 20km bicycle ride, 5km run), I struggled immensely in the first section.
My swim was a disaster. I got kicked and sucked out at the start, I lost my momentum and for the whole 750m I couldn't get my breathing right, due to googles that broke at the start (swimming with contact lenses without glasses is not a great idea). I think one of the judges, seeing me struggling after 50m, asked me if I wanted to retire, like most of the swimmers that struggle after the start.
I said forget about it and simply kept kicking and swimming until I finished my first section in 32 minutes, long after almost everyone else was gone.
I then jumped on my bicycle (a mountain bike adapted with slicks), and for most of the 20km I didn't see that many runners, I was still probably one the last, and I was passing people that retired.
The running was my best section. I passed groups of guys and girls during the 5km run that some people struggled to complete. I still had plenty of energies and at the end I managed to not finish last, which was a great achievement considered how bad I started!
Lindsey was there to congratulate me, and Curtis was there to help me, since the next triathlon he will do it as well (I think he knows this is the only sport where he can beat me!, just like my football colleague Bryan did by finishing the race 20 minutes before).
It was tough but I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to do the next!
