My experience at the event:

Completing the RAC Tough One (or "Tougher One" since the changes to the route last year, changes that made the race even more challenging!) is always a great achievement, especially, in my case, after completing the 94.7 cycle challenge only a week earlier. Thanks to finishing the two races, I got an extra medal for the Johannesburg Duathlon, after spending a total of almost 8 hours on the roads!

This time, knowing the course, I took it easy, maybe to easily, at the start. For the first 10/15km I avoided pushing too hard, especially on the very long downhills before the long, long 10km climb after the 16th km. And my plan worked. Last year my legs gave up around the 20th km, and I spent 12km of pain to get through it. This time the first annoyance started only after the 25th km (tightness of my ITB), but got bad only in the last 2kms, with cramps and jelly legs. I still managed to do the usual crazy 500 meters sprint at the end, and finishing almost in the same time as last year.

I was also impressed by my usual race companion, Jill. After spending 3 weeks sick she decided to run it and she finished just few minutes off her last year's time. Not bad at all!
