My experience at the event:

The Wally Hayward race is probably one of the most crowded spring races in the area. Due to the multitude of events (a full marathon, the last Comrade qualifier, a 21km, a 10, a 4.9km and 1km fun run) on an almost flat course (excluding the hard climb at the end), it always takes forever to find a place to park if you don't get there in time.

We arrived around 15 minutes before the 10km start, and while Jill, David and I took part in the 10km, Lindsey and her mum completed the 4.9km race.

My race started well and for around 5km I was running at a very good average. Then some sharp pain in my shins prevented me from keeping the same pace, and I ended up slowing up just enough to finish above 47 minutes (at the half-course mark I was probably running in 45/46...). I finished strongly but the pain still persists to today. Maybe shin splints?

Unlucky the previous years there was no free massage by the students of UJ (it was replaced instead by a tent offering 15 minutes for 50 rand, a rip-off), and, strangely for a race in Pretoria, no pancake sellers! So I couldn't mitigate the pain with massage and food....
