My experience at the event:

I wasn't even aware of this monthly trot in the Johannesburg zoo. Every second Sunday the zoo opens early in the morning to allow runners to complete 1 lap (5km) or 2 laps (10 km) inside the zoo. After three succesful runs you finally get a medal.

With the zoo being only 20 minutes from my house, I managed to wake up early in the morning (and it's damn cold!) to show up at the start.  After a quick first km I struggled a little on the slow hills (still a bit overweight) but I got some decent time in the second lap. My time wasn't exceptional (over 50) but it was encouraging since for once I did not have pains in my calf.
